Choose from three different program tracks: Honors Scholar, Honors Leader, and Honors Citizen.
Honors Scholar
The Honors Scholar track is ideal for students who are motivated by academic success and intellectual growth. Honors Scholars are required to take HONR 265S: Fundamentals of Scholarship and HONR 395: Senior Thesis or HONR 397: Independent Study.
Honors Leader
The Honors Leader track is perfect for students who are interested in developing leadership skills and experiential learning. Honors Leaders must take HONR 245L: Fundamentals of Leadership and HONR 391: Campus Leadership Project.
Honors Citizen
The Honors Citizen program invites students who are concerned about social issues and motivated by community building and service learning. Honors Citizens are required to take HONR 255C: Fundamentals of Civic Engagement and HONR 392: Campus Citizenship Project.
The Honors [College] provides me with opportunities and classes that wouldn’t otherwise be available. I recently took an honors Social Psychology course. There were a very small number of students in the class, meaning we got more one-on-one time with the instructor. The class was very collaborative and discussion-based, which I enjoyed. Being part of the UB Honors program also provides opportunities to explore different areas of interest, like the arts. We had the opportunity to see the Tony Award winning Broadway show, “& Juliet,” which wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the Honors program.
Eligibility
The Honors College is designed for students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement.
New students
First-year Honors College students will be registered for HONR 101F: First Year Seminar. In this class, students learn about the three different Honors tracks — Honors Scholar, Honors Leader, and Honors Citizen.
Transfer students
Undergraduate transfer students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher can apply for the Honors College before they’ve completed 60 credits.
Being in the Honors [College] allowed me to connect with a smaller group of students from all different majors. We were all able to build relationships that we normally wouldn’t have by being in different programs. It also opened the door for me to take more rigorous classes. I found the assignments interesting and stimulating.
Requirements
Honors Leaders and Honors Citizens must:
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Complete at least three Honors-designated courses with a minimum grade of “B”
- Conclude their Honors College experience with an Honors Campus Leadership or Honors Campus Citizenship project
Honors Scholars must:
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Complete at least six Honors-designated courses with a minimum grade of “B”
- Conclude their Honors College education with an Honors thesis or research project
Being a part of the Honors [College] has been an amazing experience. The program also gave me advantages like registering early for some of the best classes and participating in luncheons and receptions, where I developed relationships with other Honors students. The skills and relationships I have developed in this program will prove fruitful for my life.
